During the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union from January to June 2011, he chaired the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States (COREPER).

Dr Péter Györkös has been Hungary's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Federal Republic of Germany since November 2015. Prior to that, he was Head of the Permanent Representation of Hungary to the European Union from 2010 to 2015. During the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union from January to June 2011, he chaired the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Member States (COREPER).


From 2007 to 2009, Dr Györkös was Hungary's ambassador to Zagreb, Croatia, and from 2004 to 2006 he was head of the Europe Department in the Office for EU Affairs at the Prime Minister's Office.
From 1988 to 2004, Ambassador Dr Györkös held various positions in the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where his responsibilities included overseeing the processes for Hungary's accession to the EU. His work took him repeatedly to German-speaking countries and the Benelux countries. In addition, he taught at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium, and in the Department of International Law at ELTE University in Budapest, Hungary.


In 1992, he obtained his doctorate from the Budapest University of Economics (doctoral thesis: „Plans for German unity in the period of division and reunification of Germany“).
Ambassador Dr Györkös speaks Hungarian, English, German, French, Russian and Croatian. He is married and has two sons.
