The recent mass influx on the periphery of Europe is not an isolated incident. Ceuta was a warning sign and a clear indication of the failure of the European asylum system. It is not only Germany’s indolence, but also that of other EU countries and the UK, in dealing with this situation adequately, that is jeopardising the cultural foundations of our continent. What needs to be done?

Dr Hans-Georg Maaßen is a lawyer and former President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (2012–2018). During his tenure as President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the Office foiled more than twenty Islamist terrorist attacks in Germany, dismantled far-right terrorist groups such as the Old-School Society, and carried out proceedings to ban the NPD.
