Speaker: Birgit Kelle

The more politically fashionable it becomes to save democracy, the more endangered its actual existence becomes. – In a disturbing manner, political institutions and parties are systematically excluding those with different political views from the open discourse of a free democracy. Where a second opinion used to be seen as evidence of debate, today it is quickly reinterpreted as an alleged attack on the constitution.

In its attempt to redraw the boundaries of discourse, the state makes use of numerous instruments and institutions, but also of targeted funding for pre-parliamentary actors, thereby outsourcing the definition and limitation of what can be said to the rules of the constitutional state. A liberal democratic state that trusts in the power of its own ideas does not need such instruments in the debate between different political positions. The fact that it uses them nonetheless is a warning sign.

About the speaker: Birgit Kelle (born in 1975 in Transylvania, Romania) works as a freelance journalist and columnist for numerous print and online media outlets in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. She is an expert on topics related to family, feminism, gender criticism and bioethics, and is the author of several bestsellers. These include „GENDERGAGA“ (2015 Adeo and 2020 in a new edition by FBV Verlag), „MUTTERTIER. Eine Ansage“ (2019 Fontis Verlag, Basel) and „NOCH NORMAL? Das lässt sich gendern!“ (Still Normal? Gender Can Be Changed!) Most recently, she published „ICH KAUF MIR EIN KIND – Das unwürdige Geschäft mit der Leihmutterschaft“ (I'm Buying a Child – The Unworthy Business of Surrogacy) (FBV Verlag) in 2024.
