Artificial Intelligence 6 – Become a Prompter

Now that you have learned and practised how to write promising prompts, which is probably the most essential tool when working with AI applications, it is time to find out what else this knowledge could bring. You have practised writing prompts, right? Jobs are being lost in the field of AI applications, but entirely new ones are being created. We are only at the beginning of epoch-making changes. Perhaps you can imagine using your acquired knowledge to generate a new profession? The current situation is roughly similar to when calculators were introduced in schools.

At first, hardly anyone had one. In the 1970s, calculators were frowned upon because they gave some pupils a competitive advantage. Initially, the evil calculator was banned from class tests, just like a cheat sheet; later, it was tolerated. Then pupils from families with a slightly larger budget had programmable calculators. The teachers didn't understand them, so some students programmed their entire maths exam and were then extremely „diligent“ in the fifth period when the unsuspecting substitute teacher was supervising. The old knowledge gap was restored.

This may help to clarify what is currently happening. Let us take the example of school again. The use of AI is largely undesirable today. Teachers keep a close eye on their students to ensure that no one cheats and has their presentation or homework written by ChatGPT. A little reformatting, two examples inserted, and the AI-generated work passes as their own. At some point, tablets with ChatGPT will be allowed in the classroom. The hardware has already been purchased and Wi-Fi is available. By then, however, the talented students will have advanced so far with the precision of their prompts that their lead in the class could be virtually unassailable.

Back to the topic at hand. What can you do with your new skills in writing successful prompts? Become a prompter! The term „prompter“ in the context of artificial intelligence typically refers to someone who creates or formulates prompts that are then used in AI systems, such as ChatGPT or other text processing models.

What does a prompter do?

ChatGPT: A prompter plays an important role in effectively utilising AI models by formulating specific queries or commands that help the AI provide relevant and accurate responses. Here are some of the main tasks of a prompter:

  1. Formulate enquiriesA prompt must be able to make clear and precise requests that help the AI deliver the desired results. This may include asking questions, giving instructions, or describing scenarios.
  2. Provide contextOften, a prompter must provide additional context or specific information to ensure that the AI interprets the request in the correct context.
  3. Interpreting resultsAfter the AI has provided an answer, it may be the prompt's job to evaluate the results and decide whether they meet the requirements or whether further refinement of the prompts is necessary.
  4. Training AI modelsIn some cases, the prompt may also be tasked with training or fine-tuning AI models, particularly to improve the AI's response to certain types of prompts.

Areas of application

Prompts are used in many areas, including AI research, content creation, marketing, customer support, and education. Your ability to create effective prompts can significantly influence the performance of an AI system, especially in complex or nuanced interaction environments.

In summary, a prompter plays a key role in how interactive AI systems are used and developed by ensuring that communication between humans and machines is as clear and effective as possible.

______________

The nice thing is that prompter is not (yet) a profession that requires formal training. At most, there are training courses offered by companies that are looking for prompters themselves and cannot find any. So you can simply declare yourself a prompter. It's about as easy as becoming a management consultant, private detective or used car salesman. So if you mention in your job interview that you've been pushing ChatGPT to its limits for a few months with your prompts, which can sometimes be several A4 pages long, then you're well ahead of the game. But you have to live up to your bold claims. That goes without saying, of course.

The development and use of artificial intelligence has created a multitude of new professional fields and job opportunities spanning many industries. Prompter is just one of them. Here are some key areas and specific jobs that have been created or significantly influenced by AI:

  1. AI development and research:
    • AI researcher/engineer: Develops new AI models and algorithms.
    • Machine Learning Engineer: Specialises in the development and training of machine learning models.
    • Deep Learning Engineer: Focuses on deep neural networks and their applications.
  2. Data science and analytics:
    • Data scientist: Uses AI to analyse large amounts of data and gain insights from it.
    • Data analyst: Uses AI tools for data visualisation and analysis.
    • Data engineer: Builds infrastructures for data collection and processing required for AI applications.
  3. AI application development:

A nice closing remark for this series of articles. In the next instalment, „Artificial Intelligence 7“, we will look at the creation of images using AI.
