Dear members, friends and supporters of our foundation,
The AfD has achieved a very impressive election result. As the political foundation closely associated with the party, we are naturally delighted about this. This election result is not a matter of course. It requires thorough analysis.
As a democratic foundation, we have had to observe in recent months and even years that in Germany – not in some banana republic – the AfD's self-evident parliamentary rights as an opposition party have been trampled underfoot. We have had to observe that the federal government has not only financially supported mass demonstrations and smear campaigns against the AfD, but that members of the government have repeatedly participated in them.
All of this contradicts the fundamentals of a parliamentary democracy.
Any parliament that denies an important opposition faction parliamentary participation, as has happened in Germany in recent years, is acting in a manner that is hostile to democracy. Any federal government that actively combats an opposition party in various ways is clearly acting unlawfully and thus also anti-democratically.
Against this backdrop and these massive obstacles, the AfD's election result is simply magnificent.
In any case, we will therefore give special importance to the topics of „democracy“ and „deficit democracy“ in our foundation's work.
With this legislative period, the Desiderius Erasmus Foundation is clearly entitled to funding under the Foundation Financing Act, as the AfD is now entering the German Bundestag for the third legislative period. This is one of the new requirements. Whether the new federal government will act accordingly remains to be seen. According to the law, the Federal Minister of the Interior decides on the basis of a catalogue of criteria with vague formulations that are open to broad interpretation.
Rumour has it that the possible future Chancellor Friedrich Merz wants to leave the Home Office to the SPD. That means it could be Nancy Faeser again!
As the foundation's board of directors, we now assume that we will receive the federal funding to which we are entitled from 2026 onwards. Accordingly, we are making intensive preparations in terms of organisation and personnel.
At the same time, our foundation's programme of weekend seminars, evening events and web seminars continues in full swing. We look forward to seeing lots of participants.
However, we can only shoulder this burden through generous donations, either to our foundation's work or to the foundation's still modest assets.
With warm regards
Erika Steinbach
