Hungary and the EU – a current overview

Hungary and the EU – a current overview

Hungary was the country that courageously opened the doors of the Iron Curtain in 1989. In doing so, it took a significant risk and set an important course towards German reunification and the European Union. In the wake of mass migration towards the EU, Hungary is pursuing a clearly restrictive policy. It insists on strict border controls and consistently secures its external borders. Hungary rejects the redistribution of migrants from other EU countries. This has met with resistance from the EU and Germany in particular.

Since Russia's war of aggression, the differences between Hungary's position and the EU's decisions have become increasingly apparent. This applies to both sanctions and arms deliveries to Ukraine. At the beginning of his EU Council Presidency, Viktor Orban set out to explore a path to peace negotiations in talks with the heads of government of Ukraine, Russia and China. The EU Commission resented this greatly, and relations have become increasingly tense. We Germans have every reason to be grateful to Hungary. The political class in our country seems to have forgotten this.

This seminar will examine the various aspects of communication problems relating to the EU and also to Germany.
